ASHP Guidelines Address Challenges in Responding to Drug Shortages
BETHESDA, Md. — ASHP today published updated national guidelines outlining best practices for responding to drug shortages. The ASHP Guidelines on Managing Drug Product Shortages provide a framework that can be used by healthcare teams in patient care settings to develop policies and procedures to minimize the impact of drug shortages on quality of care.

USP Announces Intent to Postpone Official Date of USP Chapter <800>
On October 1, 2017, the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) announced its intention to postpone the official date of the General Chapter <800> Hazardous Drugs – Handling in Healthcare Settings. The new official date will align with the official date of the next revision of USP Chapter <797>, expected on December 1, 2019.

Small-Volume Parenteral Solutions Shortages - Suggestions for Management and Conservation
ASHP and the University of Utah Drug Information Service have developed a document to provide ideas and guidelines with approaches to deal with the small-volume parenteral shortage that has occurred primarily due to the devastation to Puerto Rico. ASHP continues to work closely with the FDA and others and add information to the ASHP drug shortage website as soon as new information becomes available. ASHP has new public service announcement on the value of pharmacists.

This can be deployed in any number of ways-- to patients, caregivers, a hospital/health system’s PR department for external promotion or via internal channels like the patient education channels, in waiting rooms, in an outpatient pharmacy, etc.  It is also a fantastic communication to educate the C-suite about pharmacists’ patient care role and for use as a provider status support tool.  If hospitals/health systems in Arkansas wish to customize the last slate in the video with their own logo, that is doable for a low fee. This includes video editing and delivery of an electronic file in two compression types. 


AAHP members are encouraged to urge legislators to support HR 592 which will recognize pharmacists as healthcare providers by adding them to the Medicare provider list in the Social Security Act..  APhA has created a website devoted to recognizing pharmacists as healthcare providers (  Pharmacists can stay up-to-date on this issue as well as contact their legislators to support HR 592.  Click on the green Take Action square or the link Contact your Member of Congress today to send a letter requesting your Congressman to cosponsor HR 5920.
